Introducing the High Camp Flasks Artist Series
High Camp Flasks were inspired by the creativity, energy, and joy that come from slowing down to celebrate great days outdoors—often with a good drink among friends. Our mission has always been to elevate the outdoor drinking experience, and today, we’re excited to launch a new branch of that mission. The Artist Series Flasks allow us to dig deeper into the community of adventurers and creatives by commissioning unique, beautiful artwork to adorn our flasks.
For our first Artist Series collaboration, we’ve partnered with Kinsey Hotchkiss (@kinsey.h.designs on Instagram), a New England-based artist known for her intricate, nature-inspired illustrations and signature skeleton figures. Kinsey’s work, rooted in her love for travel, the outdoors, and fun, perfectly aligns with our brand’s spirit of exploration and connection to nature. It's been a joy to bring her designs to life on a select collection of our products.
In this exclusive interview, we explore Kinsey’s creative journey, her design process, and what it means to collaborate on the Artist Series. Discover the inspiration behind her stunning hand-drawn designs and how her art brings a unique visual identity to our flasks. Join us as we celebrate the blend of art, craftsmanship, and adventure that makes this collection truly special.
More About Kinsey
What drew you to art and becoming an artist?
I’ve always been creative, even as a kid. I used to take photos of flowers and animals with my dad’s Polaroid, and I loved drawing and making clay sculptures with my sister. But it wasn’t until 2017 that I fully dove into art as a career. I majored in Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Vermont, which led me to live abroad in China for two years, teaching English and solo backpacking. From there, I lived in a van while traveling across Australia, doing odd jobs. Eventually, I landed in San Diego, where I began teaching ESL and art classes. It was then that I realized how much I missed having a creative outlet in my life. In 2017, I decided to go back to school for Graphic Design at UCSD, which kickstarted my career in illustration and design. My love for travel, adventure, and creativity came together in a way that made becoming an artist feel like a natural fit—and being able to work for myself from anywhere is a dream come true!
What journey led you to your unique style of art and design? Where did the inspiration for the skeletons come from? We love those!
Thank you! I love the skeletons too, and I’m so happy they resonate with people. My art style is largely shaped by my years of traveling, living abroad, and exploring different places. Nature plays a huge role in my work. I love recreating scenes from the places I’ve been, and I hope my art inspires others to get out there and explore as well. The skeletons came about during a creative process, and I quickly realized how fun they were to bring to life. They connect with people in unexpected ways. As my sister once put it, everyone—no matter their background, race, gender, or sexuality—can relate to a skeleton. At the end of the day, we’re all skeletons, and I think that idea resonates with people.
What has been fun about working with a brand like High Camp Flasks to create a unique product?
The whole process has been amazing! It’s been great to work with a brand that aligns with my passion for adventure and the outdoors. High Camp makes products for people who love to explore, which fits perfectly with my artistic style. Plus, having the creative freedom to design fun, adventure-filled illustrations that will be featured on products meant for outdoor experiences has been incredibly rewarding. Knowing that people will take these flasks on their adventures, and around campfires with friends, brings me so much joy!
If you’re heading out on a camping trip, which flask are you bringing, and who are you sharing it with?
Oh, that’s a tough one because I love all of them! But I’d have to say the Parkside Flask in Parasol Grey with the Moondance Edition design is my favorite. The skeletons are so fun, and they pair perfectly with the grey finish. I’m usually adventuring in our van with my boyfriend and our dog, Otis, so I’d be sharing it with him! Though I love Otis, he won’t be drinking from it, of course, but I’ll be happy to share with friends and family who join us.
What is your go-to cocktail, wine, or spirit for a camping trip?
I’m all about a good Old Fashioned! I developed a love for whiskey while living in China, which is funny, but it stuck with me. It’s my go-to, especially in the fall or winter when I add a little maple syrup for extra warmth. If it’s not an Old Fashioned, then a nice glass of Cabernet is perfect—nothing beats red wine and s’mores by the fire!
